DRC President open to dialogue with opposition leader amid political tensions

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi has agreed to engage in national dialogue following an appeal by opposition leader Martin Fayulu, signaling a rare moment of political convergence amid heightened tensions and fears of the country’s fragmentation.

The presidency announced Tshisekedi’s openness to direct talks shortly after Fayulu called for patriotic unity against the “risk of balkanization” and institutional decay.

“The President commends Mr. Fayulu’s patriotism and commitment to national cohesion and affirms his willingness to meet to safeguard the Republic from the predation threatening our institutions and territorial integrity,” tweeted Tina Salama, the president’s spokesperson.

The move marks a potential thaw in relations between the government and opposition, as the DRC grapples with escalating security crises, particularly in the east, where armed groups continue to undermine stability.

The proposed dialogue could lay the groundwork for consensus on key national priorities, including security, institutional reform, and credible future elections.

If realized, the meeting between the two leaders may prove pivotal in steering the country toward broader political stabilization.
