Burkina Faso / President Ibrahim Traoré inspires a new green dynamic: 20 million seedlings to green the country

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is firmly committing to a green revolution during the 7th edition of National Tree Day (JNA), marking a decisive step in the restoration of its forest cover. On Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Manga, Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, representing the Head of State, officially launched this major ecological mobilization. With an ambitious goal of planting 20 million trees across the national territory, this edition embraces the theme: “Medicinal Plants: A Source of Health and Climate Resilience for Communities,” highlighting the importance of local species in preserving the environment and public health.

In a context marked by alarming ecosystem degradation and the growing threat of forest disappearance, this initiative follows in the footsteps of environmental efforts initiated by President Thomas Sankara, as Environment Minister Roger Baro emphasized. With rapid population growth and increasing pressure on natural resources, the time has come for concrete, collective action. JNA 2025 aims to turn every Burkinabe citizen into an active participant in protecting forests and medicinal plants—key to ensuring lasting health and climate resilience for future generations.

True to President Ibrahim Traoré’s vision of building a green and prosperous Burkina Faso, this national campaign stands out with several major innovations. The “One Province, One Medicinal Grove” initiative and the creation of botanical gardens in 100 schools reflect a strong commitment to linking education, health, and ecology. Additionally, the unprecedented operation “The Patriotic Hour to Reforest Faso” plans to plant five million trees simultaneously in one hour—an impressive demonstration of collective ecological patriotism.

Beyond simple reforestation, JNA 2025 is a lever for social, cultural, and economic transformation, embodying the President’s vision of a Burkina Faso resolutely focused on the future. By honoring ten exemplary individuals and institutions for their environmental commitment, the government seeks to inspire a nationwide movement toward a shared goal: restoring the country’s forest heritage. Under President Traoré’s leadership, the people of Burkina Faso stand as key players in this green revolution, determined to pass on a healthy, flourishing environment to future generations.
