Côte d’Ivoire: Manipulation, defamation and blackmail, it’s time to stop Saïd Penda

The African media landscape is all too often polluted by voices that, under the guise of journalism, manipulate public opinion for personal gain. Saïd Penda sadly embodies this drift. Known for his baseless attacks and smear campaigns, he has once again made headlines with an attempt targeting the EBOMAF Group and its Chairman and CEO, Mahamadou Bonkoungou.

In a so-called “investigation” recently broadcast, Saïd Penda accused EBOMAF of never winning public contracts without resorting to corruption. A serious allegation, but one made without evidence or rigor, resembling defamation far more than genuine investigative work. According to several sources, this media outburst appears to be the result of a failed attempt at blackmail: Penda reportedly tried, in vain, to approach the group’s management seeking personal favors.

In response to this attempted manipulation, Mr. Patrice Kissi, head of communications for EBOMAF’s CEO, has filed a complaint with the Cybercrime Task Force (PLCC). A summons was issued to Saïd Penda on Monday, June 30, 2025. This recourse to legal action demonstrates the group’s determination to defend its honor while respecting the law.

Even more concerning, Saïd Penda is said to boast of supposed connections with high-level circles of power in Côte d’Ivoire, believing himself untouchable. This sense of impunity must not be allowed to continue. It affects the image and credibility of an entire nation. Allowing such behavior to go unchecked is to accept that slander and manipulation overshadow truth and justice.

The Ivorian authorities are called upon: it is time to act firmly to put an end to these excesses. Freedom of the press cannot be used as a shield for defamation, let alone blackmail. Saïd Penda must no longer be given free rein to harm institutions, individuals, or the regional economy with unfounded accusations.
