AES Confederation: Burkina Faso and Niger elected to the FAO Council, a strategic step forward for food sovereignty

The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) continues to strengthen its influence on the international stage. At the 44th session of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference held in Rome, Burkina Faso and Niger were elected to the FAO Council for a three-year term. This election, the result of a joint candidacy, highlights the growing diplomatic clout of the AES and its determination to turn agricultural challenges into levers for development and sovereignty.

In a global context marked by supply chain tensions and climate change, the presence of Burkina Faso and Niger in this strategic body represents a major opportunity. It will not only allow the voice of the Sahel to be heard but also help support and accelerate the implementation of innovative, resilient, and large-scale agricultural projects. The objective is clear: to achieve sustainable food self-sufficiency and ensure a decent life for local populations.

The statement delivered by the Permanent Representative Ambassador of Burkina Faso highlighted the significant progress driven by President Ibrahim TRAORÉ. Under his visionary leadership, ambitious initiatives have been launched to transform agriculture, promote local know-how, and strengthen the resilience of rural communities.

The vision of AES leaders, firmly focused on strategic autonomy, is based on equitable partnerships and a renewed South-South cooperation. It aims to unlock the continent’s potential and place agriculture at the core of sovereignty and dignity for its people.

The election of Burkina Faso and Niger to the FAO Council marks a new era for the Sahel. Filled with hope and transformation, this decisive step reflects the political will of AES leaders to secure a brighter future for their people through governance rooted in sovereignty, social justice, and endogenous development.
