Senegal stuns DR Congo with last-minute comeback to top group B

The 7th matchday of the African qualifiers delivered an intense showdown at Kinshasa’s Stade des Martyrs, with a top-of-the-table clash between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal. Leading Group B, the DRC hosted Senegal, sitting just one point behind, in a packed stadium.

The Congolese surprised early in the first half, opening the scoring with a brilliant move by Cédric Bakambu in the 27th minute. Minutes later, Yoane Wissa doubled the lead after capitalizing on a mistake by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy (33rd minute, 2-0). However, Senegal responded quickly as Pape Gueye pulled one back in the 39th minute, giving the Lions hope before halftime.

In the second half, the Senegalese side became more aggressive, and Nicolas Jackson equalized in the 53rd minute (2-2). The match seemed destined for a draw, but Pape Matar Sarr scored the decisive goal in the 87th minute, sealing a spectacular 3-2 comeback for Senegal.

This remarkable victory allows the Lions of Teranga to take the lead in Group B with just two matchdays remaining. The away win strengthens their position in the race for qualification to the next stage and highlights their ability to turn challenging situations around.
