Burkina Faso: Video-based traffic enforcement – a technological revolution in the service of road safety

Burkina Faso is reaching a new milestone in the modernization of its domestic security. This Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, officially launched the pilot phase of the video-based ticketing system in Ouagadougou. A major advance that places technological innovation at the service of the well-being of Burkinabe citizens.

For too long, road incivility has plagued the daily lives of users. Speeding, failure to yield, running red lights, driving on sidewalks… These irresponsible behaviors are daily causes of tragic accidents and endless congestion.

Faced with this scourge, traditional control methods have shown their limits: insufficient personnel, risks of corruption, and difficulties in enforcement.

With video-based ticketing, the state is shifting gears. This intelligent system, backed by the e-Contravention platform launched in 2023 and developed under the Smart Burkina Faso project, relies on high-performance cameras capable of automatically detecting violations.

These electronic eyes read license plates, record offenses in real time, and instantly notify offenders via SMS.

The strength of this system lies in its triple advantage: efficiency, transparency, and fairness.

No more need for physical stops subject to haggling. The machine does not cheat, does not tire, and does not play favorites. Each violation is documented, each ticket traceable.

The citizen who respects the highway code has nothing to fear; the repeat offender now knows they can no longer evade the law.

Of course, some might raise concerns about excessive surveillance. But authorities remind us that the goal is not to punish for punishment’s sake, but to save lives. Video-based ticketing is not a tool of blind repression; it is a lever for collective accountability.

In this year 2026, as Burkina Faso fights on multiple fronts for its stability, this technological advance is a breath of fresh air. It shows that even in times of crisis, the state is thinking about the daily safety of its citizens.

Bravo to Minister Mahamadou Sana and the entire Smart Burkina Faso project team for this visionary initiative.

The roads will be safer, and Burkinabe citizens can finally travel with greater peace of mind.
