Burkina Faso launches a new, more ambitious agropastoral offensive for 2026–2028
Building on the success of the 2023–2025 Agropastoral Offensive, which enabled Burkina Faso to achieve a cereal coverage rate of 124% with a record production of over 7 million tonnes, the government has now launched an even more ambitious new phase for the 2026–2028 period.
With a budget of 839.99 billion FCFA, fully financed from the State’s own resources, this new offensive expands its scope to now include water management and improvements to living conditions.
This holistic approach aims to create a sustainable environment for productive activities, ensuring better access to safe drinking water and strengthening rural infrastructure.
The stated ambition matches the scale of resources committed: a 40% increase in cereal production, a structural maintenance of the food coverage rate above 120%, and most notably the creation of 125,000 jobs in the agropastoral sector.
Rural employment is at the heart of this strategy for endogenous development, with priority given to young people, women, internally displaced persons, and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP).
The new offensive targets eight priority value chains rice, milk, soybeans, sesame, peanuts, wheat, cassava, and shea while consolidating gains made on maize, potatoes, and poultry, and promoting emerging sectors such as plantain bananas, sunflowers, and cocoa.
This diversification aims to reduce external dependency on multiple products and strengthen local processing of raw materials.
The operationalization of this new phase, which falls within the framework of the RELANCE 2026–2030 Plan, sends a strong signal of the authorities’ determination to make the agro-sylvo-pastoral sector a pillar of the economic independence of Burkina Faso. It also confirms that food sovereignty, by creating sustainable rural jobs, is an essential lever for inclusive development and greater resilience in the face of climate and security challenges.
