Burkina Faso: The transitional Assembly unanimously dissolves electoral commission

In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) of Burkina Faso passed a law to dissolve the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI). The session, chaired by Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, saw all 70 members present vote in favor of the measure.

This move marks a significant step in the institutional reforms pursued under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

It aligns with the government’s stated vision of refounding the state to serve the populace and reducing administrative costs. The CENI follows other institutions, like the Economic and Social Council, that have been dissolved for being deemed costly or ineffective.

The government’s bill cited the CENI’s loss of credibility, high operational costs, and misalignment with the country’s current socio-political realities as key justifications.

The reform aims to rationalize the electoral framework and strengthen institutional coherence during the transition period.

According to the law’s rationale, it seeks to harmonize institutions with the Transition Charter and its amendments, while supporting the ongoing “revolutionary” dynamic.

The dissolution is framed as an effort to streamline public institutions, reduce state expenditure, and enhance transparency in managing future electoral processes.

This decision opens a new chapter in  the political restructuring of Burkina Faso, focused on simplifying governance and building a more efficient state.
