Burkina Faso approves new national security strategy for 2026-2030

The government of Burkina Faso, under the leadership of President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has approved a new National Internal Security Strategy for the period of 2026-2030. The framework, validated on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, and led by Minister of Security Mahamoudou Sana, replaces the previous strategy from 2003, which was deemed inadequate for current security challenges.

This strategic overhaul is a direct response to the evolution of threats and the emergence of new forms of criminality. Minister Sana emphasized the necessity of a modern instrument to counter the increasingly complex security risks facing the nation.

A key feature of the new strategy is its integration of technology, leveraging digital tools to enhance the effectiveness of security operations.

This innovative approach aims to provide optimal protection for both urban and rural populations confronting the terrorist threat.

The development of this new framework coincides with ongoing military operations against the expansion of terrorism.

It forms part of a broader vision to secure the national territory and protect citizens, marking a significant step in the modernization of the security apparatus of Burkina Faso and demonstrating the authorities’ commitment to constantly adapting their methods in the face of complex challenges.
