Burkina Faso: Captain Ibrahim Traoré wants to equip Ouagadougou with a state-of-the-art electron microscope

In his first official address of 2026, the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, announced a major acquisition for the national scientific community: a state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope. This technological advancement will position the country at the forefront of research capabilities in West Africa.

According to available information, this cutting-edge equipment operates on the principle of electron-matter interactions to produce highly detailed surface images.

It significantly outperforms traditional optical microscopes, which are limited by the wavelength of visible light and the quality of optical lenses.

This acquisition responds to a long-expressed critical need of Burkinabe researchers.

It will end dependence on foreign laboratories for analyses requiring such sophisticated instrumentation, thereby reducing both research costs and delays.

The scanning electron microscope will have multiple applications across various fields: materials science, geology, biology, medicine, and nanotechnology.

It will enhance national innovation capacity and enable significant progress in strategic sectors such as agriculture, health, and mining.
