Diplomacy: Zelensky’s historic South Africa visit signals diplomatic shift

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to South Africa marks a turning point in once-frosty relations, as Kyiv seeks to counter Russia’s growing influence on the continent.

The trip—Zelensky’s first official African visit since 2019—comes amid strained ties with the U.S., his country’s key ally, following President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukraine and freezing of military aid.

For South Africa, the meeting offers a chance to bolster its image as a mediator. President Cyril Ramaphosa, who previously led a failed African peace mission to Kyiv and Moscow, emphasized discussions on finding “a path to peace.”

He also noted a recent call with Vladimir Putin, reaffirming Pretoria’s ties with Russia despite Western pressure.

The visit carries risks for Ramaphosa, whose government faces U.S. backlash over its ICJ case against Israel and accusations of mistreating white Afrikaners.

Analysts suggest South Africa will tread carefully to avoid further straining relations with Washington while exploring trade opportunities with Ukraine.

“South Africa could become Ukraine’s gateway to Africa,” said political analyst Siphamandla Zondi, citing the country’s ports and financial systems.

However, Africa is unlikely to pick sides, relying on both nations for critical grain exports. Zelensky’s overture may open new doors—but not at Moscow’s expense.
