Togo: Maximum health alert after massive discovery of dead fish in Lomé

A concerning situation arose on Monday, May 5, 2025, in the Todman neighborhood of Lomé, where a large number of dead fish were found in the stormwater retention basin. In response to this unusual event, the Togolese government reacted swiftly by mobilizing the relevant services, particularly from the Ministry of Health, to remove and incinerate the dead fish.

A security perimeter was set up around the basin to prevent any attempts to recover these potentially hazardous fish. At the same time, toxicological and chemical analyses were initiated to determine the exact cause of the fish die-off. The results will help clarify the source of the contamination and guide appropriate preventive measures.

While awaiting the findings of the investigation, authorities are urging the public to exercise great caution, particularly by avoiding the consumption of fish with unclear origins. The government reminded the population of the health risks associated with uncontrolled consumption: poisoning, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and even more serious complications.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of certain urban aquatic ecosystems, which are often exposed to industrial, domestic, or other forms of pollution. It also underscores the importance of the health control mechanisms implemented by Togolese authorities to ensure the quality of seafood consumed by the population.

The Ministry of Health has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing food chain monitoring and control operations, particularly in high-risk areas. It also encourages citizens to report any suspicious situations involving seafood or freshwater products.

While waiting for test results, caution remains essential. The government has promised to keep the public informed of any developments and to take all necessary measures to protect public health.
