Burkina Faso: Nuclear energy as a lever for sovereignty under the enlightened vision of Captain Ibrahim Traoré
At the heart of a region facing major economic, security, and energy challenges, Burkina Faso is embarking on an ambitious transformation under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré. His vision of a modern and self-reliant nation is built on bold energy choices, embodied by the firm commitment to establish a peaceful nuclear power program. This initiative, presented during the 68th regular session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), clearly illustrates President Traoré’s dedication to sustainable development and responsible energy diversification.
Burkina Faso’s project, formally submitted to the IAEA, aims to meet the country’s growing electricity demand while diversifying energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Fully aware of environmental challenges and the need for stable energy to support industrialization, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has sought technical and institutional support from the IAEA to guide each stage of this transition. In response, the IAEA has offered comprehensive assistance: technical support for planning, design, and implementation; training programs for engineers, technicians, and institutional leaders; and support for developing a legal framework aligned with international nuclear safety and security standards.
The IAEA will also assist in assessing existing energy infrastructure, including the national grid and potential sites for nuclear facilities. Another key aspect is the creation of an independent national authority to regulate and oversee the nuclear program, ensuring transparency and regulatory compliance.
The benefits for the population are significant. Nuclear power will help stabilize the national grid, foster industrialization, and create skilled jobs. This project also represents a lever for energy sovereignty, reducing dependence on global market fluctuations. The establishment of a strict legal framework, local capacity building, and public awareness reflect Captain Traoré’s commitment to an inclusive, transparent, and secure transition.
