Chad / AES: Towards a strategic alliance for regional sovereignty

The President of Chad, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, is signaling a growing willingness to strengthen ties with the Sahel States Alliance (AES), composed of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Although not a member of this organization, Chad shares with these countries a common vision centered on sovereignty, political independence, and regional security.

In several statements, the Chadian Head of State has expressed consistent support for the idea of sovereignty promoted by AES leaders. This alignment opens the door to enhanced dialogue and the possibility of joint initiatives, particularly in security, economic, and diplomatic matters.

The recent official visit of President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Niamey illustrates this desire to build new ties with one of the AES founding members, Niger. Discussions with Nigerien authorities focused on bilateral cooperation as well as regional issues such as counterterrorism, border management, and the development of shared infrastructure.

Chad, with its strategic geographic position and military experience, is considered a key ally in Sahel stability. A closer relationship with the AES could strengthen the collective capacity of Sahelian countries to defend their interests in the face of security challenges and external pressures.
