Hannibal Gaddafi freed in Lebanon after a decade in detention
After a decade behind bars in Lebanon, Hannibal Gaddafi, the son of the former Libyan leader, is now free and permitted to leave the country.
His arrest in 2015 stemmed from long-standing suspicions that he possessed information regarding the 1978 disappearance of prominent Lebanese Shia cleric Moussa al-Sadr an event that occurred when Gaddafi was just two years old.
His release follows a decision by Lebanese authorities to significantly reduce his bail from $11 million to $900,000, a sum reportedly paid by a Libyan delegation.
In a concurrent development, Gaddafi’s legal team withdrew a complaint filed the previous month in Geneva against the Lebanese state, which had challenged his prolonged detention without formal charges.
Prior to his capture by Lebanese militants in 2015, who were demanding information on al-Sadr’s fate, Hannibal Gaddafi had been living in exile in Syria.
