Burkina Faso pursues digital sovereignty as National imperative, President announces

OUAGADOUGOU – At the 20th Digital Week opening ceremony on Tuesday,  the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, emphasized the critical importance of digital sovereignty for the nation. While acknowledging progress made over the past two decades, he stressed that the country remains far from its digital goals and declared digital autonomy a national priority under the Popular Progressive Revolution.

To strengthen this sovereignty, President Traoré has launched an ambitious digital transformation program targeting 2030, aimed at positioning Burkina Faso among key global digital players.

The initiative seeks to foster national autonomy and competitiveness in vital sectors such as health, education, security, and defense through the strategic use of digital technologies.

Key measures include establishing national data centers to host data locally and reduce reliance on foreign providers, alongside developing domestic administrative applications to modernize public services, improve governance, and combat corruption.

In support of this vision, Minister of Digital Transition Aminata Zerbo/Sabané committed to designing AI tools tailored to Burkina Faso’s specific needs.

The Deputy Minister of Digital Technologies of Ghana, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, highlighted the importance of regional collaboration, urging African nations to pool efforts and advance together in the use of artificial intelligence—a path set to define the country’s digital future.
