Cameroon: Political developments and security challenges under President Paul Biya

Under the presidency of Paul Biya, Cameroon has seen notable advances in governance, particularly through political and social reforms. A key milestone in this process was the introduction of multiparty politics in the 1990s. This reform paved the way for greater political diversity, allowing opposition parties to emerge and bring new voices into the national debate.

At the same time, freedom of association has been expanded, strengthening citizen participation in political life.

Another significant initiative was the establishment, in 2022, of a commission to rehabilitate the history of the country’s independence movements.

This step symbolizes a desire for reconciliation and recognition of the struggles carried out for independence, with the aim of restoring national unity.

By acknowledging these historical events, President Paul Biya’s government has highlighted its commitment to promoting peace and healing the divisions of the past.

Nevertheless, despite these advances, the country has faced major challenges. The fight against Boko Haram in northern Cameroon has grown in scale, with the terrorist group threatening regional stability.

The government has deployed military efforts to protect populations and maintain security.

Cameroon has also been shaken by the Anglophone crisis, which has deeply divided the country.

Anglophone separatists, calling for greater autonomy, sparked a crisis that President Paul Biya and his government have managed effectively.

The government has launched reconciliation dialogues to address the situation.
