Burkina Faso: Installation of National Commission marks key step in AES confederation process

The institutional maturation process of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) is reaching a decisive stage in Burkina Faso. The establishment of the National Commission for Monitoring the Confederation, formalized by presidential decree, constitutes an essential link in consolidating this new alliance between Sahelian states. This permanent structure embodies the will to move from occasional cooperation to deep, structured integration.

The major advantage of this commission lies in its capacity to ensure seamless vertical and horizontal coordination.

By centralizing the monitoring of decisions made at the highest level by AES heads of state, it acts as a control tower.

It guarantees that the strategic directions defined during summits do not remain dead letters but are concretely translated into actions on the ground.

This function as an “institutional memory” is crucial for maintaining course and coherence in common policies over time.

Operationally, the commission structures its action around three fundamental pillars, the true mainstays of the confederal edifice.

The first pillar, defense and security, anchors cooperation in the vital urgency of the fight against terrorism, enabling the pooling of intelligence and military efforts.

The second, dedicated to development, paves the way for joint structuring projects (energy, transport, agriculture) that will have a far greater impact than an isolated national approach.

Finally, the third pillar, diplomacy, allows the three nations to speak with one voice on the international stage, thereby multiplying their geopolitical weight.

The effectiveness of this system also rests on its capacity to permeate the entire national institutional ecosystem.

To this end, the National Commission has undertaken a proactive coordination approach.

By requesting the designation of focal points within various institutions such as the Transitional Legislative Assembly, it creates a network of direct correspondents.

This institutional networking is a considerable asset: it streamlines information exchange, accelerates procedures, and ensures that each national entity is aligned and contributes effectively to the confederal agenda.

The preparation of meetings at the governmental, parliamentary, or senior official levels is thus optimized, gaining in coherence and preparation.

The establishment of this National Commission goes beyond a simple administrative framework. It is the symbol of a collective ambition equipping itself with the tools to succeed.

By ensuring the constant link between the vision of the Heads of State and the reality of national administrations, it lays the foundations for a strong, responsive, and united Confederation, capable of effectively meeting the common challenges of security, prosperity, and regained sovereignty.
