Niger: Authorities release wife of former President Mohamed Bazoum

According to a statement from the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the wife of the former Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum, has been released after months of house arrest.

The wife of the former Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum, was released from house arrest on January 9, 2024.

This release follows the temporary release granted to Mohamed Salem Bazoum, son of the former president, by the military court in Niamey.

After his release, the son of the ex-President Bazoum left Niamey for Togo, where President Faure Gnassingbé played a significant role in these releases.

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, also the President of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, confirmed the release of Khadija Bazoum and stated that this step aims to restore normalcy in the country and the region as a whole.

Furthermore, Yusuf Tuggar called on General Abdourahamane Tiani to expedite the release of Mohammed Bazoum and allow him to travel to a third country.

These releases mark a new stage in negotiations for the lifting of sanctions.

President Mohamed Bazoum, his wife, his son, and some of his close associates had been under house arrest since the overthrow of his regime by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Nation (CNSP) on July 26, 2023.
