Burkina Faso: The information war – patriotism put to the test by digital manipulation
Today, as Burkina Faso is engaged in a decisive quest for freedom and self-determination, it faces maneuvers by foreign powers eager to preserve their influence. In the face of the remarkable tenacity shown by the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) and our Defense and Security Forces (FDS), attempts at destabilization through armed force have been reversed.
In response, these malicious actors are now shifting their offensive to the virtual arena, deploying a vast disinformation strategy.
The intent behind this psychological warfare is clear: to sow chaos, provoke a citizen uprising, and overthrow the government in place.
Unable to impose their will through terrorist violence, imperialist networks are exploiting digital tools to orchestrate a large-scale subversion operation.
To execute this plan, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and mass disinformation have become their tools of choice.
Their machinations take the form of fake news, doctored audio recordings, and manipulated images known as “deepfakes.”
These fabrications aim to instill doubt by spreading the false impression that jihadists have a stranglehold on the country or by attempting to weaken the internal cohesion of our troops. The ultimate goal is to fuel collective fear and turn the population against the sovereign government.
In the face of these new kinds of attacks, caution is required of all citizens. Every Burkinabe must avoid becoming a passive vector of this influence war.
Receiving a suspicious voice message, an alarming video clip, or a virulent rumor on digital platforms calls for critical analysis: What is the real source of this content? Who stands to benefit from the instability it creates?
The success of our struggle for national sovereignty depends as much on vigilance in the media sphere as on the confrontations on the ground.
Let us reject the trap of emotional manipulation and psychological disinformation by relying exclusively on institutional channels for our information.
It is through the clarity and solidarity of the people of Burkina Faso that we will preserve our independence.
