Ethiopia: Internet services disrupted in Tigray amid renewed fighting

Internet and telephone services have been disrupted in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region following renewed fighting between regional forces and the national army.

According to reports, state-owned telecom operator Ethio Telecom has experienced a complete service disruption in parts of Tigray. Services provided by private operator Safaricom remain available in some areas.

Meanwhile, the communications blackout has made it difficult to obtain reliable information about developments on the ground. Access to images and videos from Tigray has also remained limited.

According to sources, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which controls the region, may have ordered the shutdown. One source suggested the measure could be linked to efforts to disrupt government drone operations. The TPLF has not publicly commented on the claim.

Furthermore, the disruption is affecting daily economic activity. Many residents depend on internet-based banking and mobile money services for payments and other transactions.
