Morocco: Strategic partnership with China to produce batteries in Tangiers

Morocco is also making strides in the electric vehicle industry, embarking on an ambitious project to develop its automotive sector and electric battery production capabilities.

Recently, the Moroccan government entered into a significant partnership with a Chinese investment group, committing 3 billion dirhams to establish a new cathode production plant in Tangier.

Cathodes, essential components in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles, will be produced in this new facility, with an annual capacity of up to 50,000 tons.

The project will be rolled out in two phases, starting with an initial production capacity of 25,000 tons per year by 2026.

This initiative aims to bolster Morocco’s automotive industry and solidify its status as a leading hub for electric vehicle manufacturing in Africa.

In 2023, Morocco produced and exported 700,000 vehicles. The country aims to double this figure within four years, reaching the milestone of one million vehicles produced and exported by 2024.

This ambitious growth is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to diversify its economy and promote technological innovation within the automotive sector.
