Niger: Urgent measures to tackle the resurgence of terrorist attacks in Diffa

Criminals continue to wreak havoc in certain regions of Niger, but certainly not for long. Victims of their barbarism in these localities are multiplying day by day. This is the case in the Diffa region, in southeastern Niger.

The latest misdeed of these heartless and faithless individuals dates back to Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

A terrorist attack carried out by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect near the village of Gargada, in the Chétimari commune, claimed the lives of four agents of the Energy Sector Regulatory Authority (ARSE).

While on a mission in the Diffa region, they were attacked on the Mainé Soroa-Diffa stretch of National Route No. 1.

This stretch is known to be dangerous due to the repeated attacks recorded in the area.

According to information, the assailants seem to be targeting 4×4 vehicles lately.

Following numerous attacks on this stretch in April, off-road vehicles such as 4x4s (Toyota, Hilux, hard-top, V8, 105…) were taken by the assailants.

In response to this situation, the authorities of Niger have taken alternative measures to reduce the deterioration of the security situation in the area, pending more appropriate measures.

The authorities have strictly prohibited the movement without military escort of these targeted vehicles on the stretch.

These vehicles are often used by government services, NGOs, as well as individuals.

In addition to this measure, the issue is also being addressed at the regional security council level, making the securing of these routes a new priority for the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) deployed as part of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
