Burkina Faso/France: The Burkinabe people confront French diplomats who do not inspire confidence

The vigilant people of Burkina Faso are highly protective of their national authorities and deeply distrustful of French diplomats residing in Ouagadougou.

For several weeks now, the citizens have been demanding the relocation of the French embassy due to its proximity to the presidential residence of President Ibrahim TRAORE.

A one-month deadline was set, and the date is fast approaching. So far, there has been no indication of any action taken.

Supporters of the transitional government are resolute, showing no signs of wavering.

According to reports, a mass demonstration is scheduled for Friday, June 28th, in front of the embassy to reiterate their demand.

In May, the Burkinabe government ordered the suspension of unauthorized construction activities at the French ambassador’s residence.

These included a 28-unit housing project and a fuel storage facility, which reportedly began in 2023 without permission from local authorities.

Additionally, since Burkina Faso’s decision to cut ties with France, French nationals in Ouagadougou have faced suspicion of subversive activities and espionage.

This, coupled with the looming threat of destabilization against Captain Ibrahim TRAORE’s regime, has heightened tensions.

There have also been alarming and suspicious remarks from certain high-ranking French officials concerning the AES countries, which has further fueled concerns among transition supporters for the safety of their leaders.

They place their trust in these leaders to achieve national liberation, dignity, and restored sovereignty.
