Joe Bryant, father of Kobe Bryant, passes away at 69

The basketball world is in mourning as Joe Bryant, the father of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, has passed away at the age of 69.

His death comes four years after the tragic helicopter accident that claimed the lives of Kobe and his daughter Gianna.

Joe Bryant, also a former professional basketball player, succumbed to a severe stroke, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Joe Bryant’s basketball career was notable in its own right. Drafted 14th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 1975, he played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Houston Rockets.

In his NBA career, spanning 606 games, Bryant averaged 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Known for his versatility and reliable mid-range shot, he earned the nickname “Jellybean” due to his love for candy.

Following his NBA career, Bryant played in Italy from 1984 to 1991 for teams such as Rieti, Reggio Calabria, and Reggio Emilia.

It was in Italy where his son Kobe spent part of his childhood and developed a passion for soccer, becoming a fan of AC Milan.

The family later moved to France, where Joe concluded his professional playing career with FC Mulhouse Basket.

In addition to his playing career, Joe Bryant also made his mark as a coach, working with teams in the United States, Japan, and Thailand.

His contributions to the sport and his legacy as Kobe Bryant’s father will be remembered by the basketball community.
