Enzo Maresca on Chelsea’s squad management: “I Only Work with Half the Team”

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca didn’t mince words when discussing his approach to managing the club’s oversized squad. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Maresca made it clear that he has no interest in working with all 42 players on the roster.

“I only work with 21 players,” he stated bluntly, emphasizing that the remaining squad members are not part of his plans.

As Chelsea prepares for the first leg of their Conference League playoff against Servette, Maresca, fresh off the signing of João Félix, expressed his frustration when questioned about the challenges of managing such a large group.

“The other 15 to 20 players train separately. I don’t see them. It’s not the chaos it might seem from the outside. Not at all. Even if they have a 20-year contract, that’s not my concern. I don’t care.”

Maresca’s candid remarks highlight the internal pressures at Chelsea, where balancing a bloated roster has become a significant issue.

How the sidelined players will respond to this blunt assessment remains to be seen.
