Tom Saintfiet takes the helm of Mali’s National Football Team

In a significant move for Malian football, the Malian Football Federation (Femafoot) announced on Wednesday evening the appointment of Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet as the new head coach of the national team, the Eagles. Saintfiet, 51, steps in to replace Eric Chelle.

Femafoot confirmed the news via social media, stating, “Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian coach, is the new head of the Eagles of Mali.”

Saintfiet’s extensive experience in African football, including stints with Togo and, most recently, The Gambia from 2018 to 2024, positions him as a knowledgeable leader.

After the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, he briefly moved to coach in the Philippines in February 2024. His return to the African football scene is anticipated to bring stability and unity to the Malian squad, which has been marred by internal divisions.

Saintfiet is reported to have signed a two-year contract, signaling his commitment to the Eagles as they look to regain their footing on the international stage.

His expertise and familiarity with the African football landscape will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead and restoring harmony within the team.
