Burkina Faso: Improved Security in Sanmatenga enables return of displaced populations

The security situation in Sanmatenga Province, located in the Center-North region of Burkina Faso, has significantly improved, allowing thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to return to their homes. This progress highlights the effectiveness of the country’s security forces and the firm resolve of Burkinabe authorities to eliminate the threat of terrorism.

As of November 30, 2024, 156,729 IDPs—accounting for 46.71% of the displaced population in Sanmatenga—have returned to their communities.

These individuals, spread across 25,969 households, mark a substantial shift compared to March 31, 2023, when Sanmatenga recorded 335,474 IDPs.

At that time, the region had the highest concentration of displaced persons in the Center-North, which totaled 493,954, out of a national figure of 2,062,534 IDPs.

Strategic gains and renewed stability

Zakaria Sawadogo, the provincial director for humanitarian action in Sanmatenga, shared these figures during the third ordinary session of the Provincial Consultation Framework.

He emphasized the role of intensified military operations in reclaiming territory.

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso’s forces secured control over 70.59% of the country in 2024.

This renewed stability is attributed to the military’s robust offensive strategies, which align with the president’s vision for restoring national sovereignty.

The active involvement of communities, driven by their desire for peace, has further bolstered these efforts.

A Promising Path Forward

Looking ahead to 2025, President Traoré has pledged to strengthen anti-terrorism initiatives.

Key measures include the expansion of combat units through the establishment of additional Rapid Intervention Battalions (BIR) and continued investment in modern military equipment to enhance the operational capabilities of forces on the ground.

These decisive actions aim to consolidate gains, ensure long-term security, and provide a stable foundation for displaced populations to rebuild their lives in their home communities.
