A$AP Rocky’s Assault Trial: High stakes for rapper amid career milestones

Rapper A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, is set to face trial on felony assault charges stemming from a 2021 incident in Los Angeles, where he is accused of firing a gun at former friend and fellow artist Terell Ephron.

The trial begins Friday and could lead to a 24-year prison sentence if he is convicted.

The alleged altercation took place near a Hollywood hotel following a heated argument between Mayers and Ephron, both members of the A$AP Mob collective.

Prosecutors claim Mayers fired twice, grazing Ephron’s knuckles, though the defense argues the weapon was a “prop gun” incapable of firing live ammunition.

A$AP Rocky’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, criticized delays in reporting the incident and questioned the validity of evidence, including shell casings reportedly collected by Ephron days after the event.

This trial coincides with pivotal career moments for the rapper, who is set to co-chair the 2025 Met Gala and star in Spike Lee’s upcoming film Highest 2 Lowest alongside Denzel Washington.

Mayers, who shares two children with Rihanna, maintains his innocence. As opening arguments begin, the jury’s decision will weigh heavily on both his legal and professional future.
