Alonso unlikely to leave Bayer Leverkusen despite Bayern Munich and Liverpool interest

Xabi Alonso, who took charge of Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022, has become a sought-after candidate for coaching roles at top clubs like Bayern Munich and Liverpool. This interest has arisen due to the imminent departures of Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp from these clubs.

Despite the allure of managing such prominent teams, Lothar Matthaus, a Bayern Munich legend, is skeptical about Alonso leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the current season.

Matthaus suggests that Alonso’s impressive coaching credentials, authoritative style, and successful stint with Bayer Leverkusen make him an ideal candidate for Bayern Munich.

However, he believes Alonso’s current focus remains on Leverkusen, where he aims to secure titles in the remaining months of the season.

The consultant underscores Alonso’s loyalty and character, stating that the unfolding situations and potential opportunities at other clubs do not currently interest him.

Matthaus notes that while Alonso may dream of coaching Bayern, Liverpool, or Real Madrid in the future, he believes Alonso is not finished with his project at Leverkusen.

Matthaus further emphasizes that Alonso is not swayed by big names or financial considerations.

Instead, Alonso values what he has built and with whom he has built it, indicating a strong likelihood that he will remain at Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming season.
