Cameroonian Football Federation in Crisis: Age fraud scandal rocks Victoria United Player
The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) is currently in turmoil due to an age fraud case involving Wilfried Nathan Douala, a player for the Victoria United team in the Cameroonian first division championship.
The situation has taken a concerning turn with the temporary suspension of 61 players for the MTN Elite One championship playoffs, revealing instances of dual identities and age inconsistencies among the players.
At the heart of this scandal is Nathan Douala, a Cameroonian midfielder previously celebrated as the youngest player in the last Africa Cup of Nations.
However, allegations now suggest that Douala may have intentionally lied about his age.
According to investigations conducted by Le Monde in January 2022, it is implied that Douala might have been 21 at the time.
More troublingly, his true identity is said to be Alexandre Bardelli, aged at least 23 presently.
Despite prior knowledge of this situation before the 2023 AFCON, the Cameroonian Football Federation chose to remain silent.
The consequences of this scandal could be disastrous, risking the exclusion of Cameroon from the next two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations for fielding a player potentially guilty of misrepresenting both age and identity.
