NIGER: TRIUMPHANT RE-ELECTION OF VLADIMIR PUTIN/ GENERAL TIANI CONGRATULATES HIS RUSSIAN COUNTERPART

On Monday, March 18, 2024, General Abdourahamane Tiani sent a congratulatory letter to Vladimir Putin, commending him on his “brilliant re-election” as the leader of Russia following the March 17, 2024, elections. Indeed, Putin secured a fifth term in office with a landslide victory, receiving nearly 88% of the votes cast.

In his message, the new leader of Niger lauded his counterpart’s efforts in maintaining stability in Russia.

Tiani emphasized the critical importance of Putin’s re-election, highlighting the complete trust of the Russian people in their leader, their support for Putin’s governance agenda, and their ambition to propel Russia forward in various areas.

Furthermore, the military junta leader in Niamey expressed confidence in Putin’s leadership to continue advancing his country’s progress.

Additionally, General Abdourahamane Tiani, the President of the transitional government in Niger, expressed the country’s desire to maintain and strengthen cooperation with the Russian Federation.

It’s worth noting that the relationship between the two countries has intensified in recent months following the establishment of the CNSP after the coup on July 26.

In their efforts to intensify and more effectively combat terrorism that has plagued Niger for over a decade, the transitional authorities in Niamey have chosen to diversify their partnerships by revoking agreements with traditional partners that have proven detrimental.

In this context, the Sahelian country has strengthened ties with countries like Iran and Russia, with whom security cooperation is thriving.

Moreover, in his letter, General Tiani congratulated the re-elected President for his support in Niger’s «historic struggle» for «reclaiming its sovereignty and development».
