Opening of a Turkish studies centre at the University of Lomé, the Lomé-Ankara axis even stronger

Since the first official visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to his Togolese counterpart Faure Gnassingbé in October 2021, diplomatic relations between the two countries have entered a new dynamic.

A consular section has been set up to issue visas at the Turkish embassy in Lomé, and trade between Lomé and Ankara has increased considerably.

Today, cooperation is being strengthened in the field of education.

Announced in December 2023 by the Turkish diplomat in Togo, Muteber Kiliç, Togo and Turkey have just sealed their relationship in the field of education through the opening of a study and research centre at the University of Lomé.

The agreement, signed by University President Adama Kpodar and Mahmut Mustafa Ozdil of the Maarif Foundation, marks the start of relations in the education sector between the two countries.

The mission of the future study centre will be to promote Turkish culture and civilisations and interdisciplinary research.

In addition to sharing experiences, the centre will encourage academic collaboration between teacher-researchers from the two countries through mobility programmes for teachers, students and administrative staff.

The centre will also offer scholarships to young Togolese students.
