Carlos Alcaraz reaches first Roland-Garros final after Epic five-set victory over Jannik Sinner
Carlos Alcaraz has secured his first-ever spot in the Roland-Garros final after a grueling five-set victory over Italy’s Jannik Sinner in a dramatic semifinal clash on Friday.
The match, which unfolded on June 7, saw the young Spanish sensation triumph after more than four hours of intense and physically demanding tennis.
The highly anticipated showdown between Alcaraz and Sinner, the newly crowned world number one, did not disappoint.
Both players, aged 21 and 22 respectively, have established a fierce rivalry, having each won four of their previous eight encounters. This ninth meeting was set to break the deadlock.
Alcaraz, who boasts Grand Slam titles from the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023, faced a formidable challenge in Sinner, who claimed a major victory at the Australian Open earlier this year by defeating Novak Djokovic.
Despite Sinner taking an early lead and winning the first set, Alcaraz staged a remarkable comeback.
The tide began to turn in the fourth set as Sinner battled cramps and Alcaraz found his rhythm.
Ultimately, Alcaraz clinched the decisive fifth set, winning the match with a scoreline of 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Seen as a potential heir to Rafael Nadal’s legacy, Alcaraz will now compete in his maiden Roland-Garros final in just his fourth appearance at the tournament.
He awaits the winner of the semifinal between Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev, set to determine his opponent for Sunday’s final.
