From Gangster to Minister: Gayton McKenzie’s unconventional rise in South African politics

Gayton McKenzie, a former gangster and bank robber turned nightclub owner and opposition politician, has ascended to the role of South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s newly formed multi-party government.

His appointment follows the ANC’s loss of parliamentary majority in the recent elections.

McKenzie, known for his provocative style and background, expressed enthusiasm for his new role, highlighting his journey from a life of crime to motivational speaking and business ventures.

He co-founded the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and garnered support, particularly from South Africa’s coloured community.

His political platform includes tough stances on immigration and crime, which resonated with voters but drew criticism for alleged xenophobia.

Despite controversies, McKenzie remains focused on using sports to uplift youth and combat gangsterism, promising to elevate car spinning into a mainstream sport.

However, his political career has been marred by legal challenges, including accusations of financial mismanagement during his tenure as mayor.

McKenzie remains defiant, pledging transparency amid ongoing investigations, setting the stage for a politically contentious term in office.
