USA/ Robert Smalls: A Hero’s Legacy finally honoured in South Carolina
In a significant milestone for South Carolina, a statue of Robert Smalls—an African American hero of the Civil War era—will soon grace the Statehouse gardens, marking the first time an individual African American is honored in this way. Smalls’ life story is a powerful testament to courage and resilience, as he famously escaped slavery and fought for the freedom of others.
Born in 1839 in Beaufort, Smalls orchestrated a daring escape during the Civil War, commandeering a Confederate vessel named the Planter.
His bold act of defiance not only liberated himself and his family but also served as a rallying cry for the fight against slavery.
Recognizing his leadership, President Abraham Lincoln enlisted Smalls to help form the United States Colored Troops, where he played a pivotal role in advocating for African American enlistment.
Throughout his life, Smalls made notable contributions as a U.S. Congressman, where he was instrumental in rewriting South Carolina’s constitution to ensure equal rights for Black citizens after the war.
Despite facing overwhelming challenges as white supremacist forces sought to undermine those gains, Smalls’ legacy endured.
The journey to erect a statue in his honor faced obstacles over the years, but 2024 proved to be a turning point.
Thanks to the unwavering support of Representative Brandon Cox, the proposal gained unanimous approval in both the House and Senate, reflecting a collective recognition of Smalls’ impact.
“Robert Smalls is not just a hero of South Carolina; he embodies the spirit of America,” Cox declared. “His bravery during the Civil War and his leadership in Congress are legacies we must celebrate.”
As South Carolina prepares to unveil the statue, it serves as a poignant reminder of Smalls’ extraordinary life and his relentless fight for justice.
State Representative Jermaine Johnson highlighted the statue’s significance, stating, “It’s crucial for us to have figures like Smalls, who overcame immense adversity. His story resonates with so many of us today, offering hope and inspiration.”
With this honor, Robert Smalls’ remarkable journey from slavery to freedom, and his commitment to equality, will be immortalized for generations to come.
