Niger: Massive rally in Diffa celebrates Sahel Alliance and sovereignty efforts

The city of Diffa in Niger came alive on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, as thousands gathered for a monumental rally in support of the national authorities and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

The event marked one year since the region’s decisive break from ECOWAS, symbolizing a collective push for greater sovereignty and independence for Sahelian nations.

Crowds from across the Diffa region assembled at the official podium to express solidarity with the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) and the governments of Burkina Faso and Mali, fellow AES members.

The rally saw the participation of regional officials, traditional leaders, security forces, and civil society representatives, showcasing a united front.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Deputy Secretary-General Daouda Bardé emphasized the importance of unity in facing shared challenges.

“Let us remain united and resolute as we navigate this pivotal moment in our history,” he urged.

The speeches heavily criticized the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS following the political events of July 26, 2023. Colonel Abdou Halilou described ECOWAS as a “club of heads of state,” blaming the organization for causing hardship through shortages and economic pressures.

In contrast, speakers praised the resilience of Sahelian populations, framing the break with ECOWAS as the dawn of a new era for the region.

Representatives from Nigeria and Chad also attended, highlighting the growing regional solidarity beyond AES borders.

The gathering was part of broader efforts to celebrate a vision of a united, self-reliant Sahel, committed to forging a prosperous and independent future.

The message from the people of AES was clear: unity and determination will shape their path to a brighter, sovereign tomorrow.
