Sénégal deprived of Pape Gueye for crucial World Cup Qualifier against Togo

Dakar, March 24, 2025 – The Senegalese national team will face Togo in a decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday without key midfielder Pape Gueye. The 22-year-old Villarreal player suffered a right ankle sprain during Friday’s goalless draw against Sudan in Benghazi, forcing his return to Spain for further treatment.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed the injury in a statement, emphasizing the need for immediate rehabilitation under his club’s supervision.

Currently third in Group B with nine points—trailing Sudan (11) and DR Congo (10)—the Lions must secure a victory to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Gueye’s absence deals a blow to coach Aliou Cissé’s midfield strategy, raising pressure on replacements to step up. With only three matches remaining in the qualifiers, every point is critical.

 Senegal’s clash against Togo (21:00 GMT) now becomes a must-win encounter, testing the squad’s depth and resilience in the race for North America 2026.
