Togo introduces major Fiscal overhaul to boost national economy

Togo has taken a significant step toward strengthening its economic governance with the approval of a sweeping fiscal reform package. The new legal framework, passed by lawmakers on March 25, aims to modernize the country’s revenue collection system and enhance transparency in public financial management.

The reforms come in response to a performance audit that revealed inefficiencies in Togo’s tax and customs administration over the past decade, despite some progress.

Inspired by global best practices, the revised framework will restructure the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR), equipping it with stronger governance mechanisms to tackle the challenges of an increasingly complex and interconnected global economy.

Key improvements include:

  • Enhanced accountabilityin public fund management.
  • Modernized tax and customs administrationto improve efficiency.
  • Stronger institutional oversightto curb revenue leaks.

President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé and his government have emphasized that these changes reflect their commitment to responsible economic stewardship—a crucial factor in driving Togo’s sustainable development.

The reforms are expected to foster a more business-friendly environment while ensuring optimal mobilization of domestic resources.

This strategic move positions Togo as a proactive player in regional fiscal innovation, aligning with broader efforts to promote economic resilience and growth.
