Morocco’s failed pursuit of Luis Enrique revealed

Moroccan football officials secretly planned to replace coach Walid Regragui with PSG’s Luis Enrique last season, sources confirm. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) monitored Enrique’s rocky start at PSG, ready to pounce if he became available.

FRMF president Faouzi Lekjaa saw the Spanish tactician – who was eliminated  by Morocco from the 2022 World Cup – as the ideal candidate to lead their 2025 AFCON campaign.

However, Enrique’s turnaround at PSG, including a Champions League semifinal run and new contract, ended Morocco’s hopes.

The revelation comes as Regragui prepares to lead Morocco’s home AFCON bid amid heightened expectations following their 2022 World Cup heroics.

While federation officials publicly back Regragui, their interest in Enrique exposes ambitions to compete with global football powers.
