Burkina Faso: Launch of regional sports academies in Kaya, a decisive step towards the emergence of a national sporting elite

In a significant push for sports development, Burkina Faso officially began construction on thirteen regional sports academies on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The initiative, led by Minister of Sports, Youth, and Employment Roland Somda, forms part of the Presidential Initiative for Sports Excellence (IP-RELIS) and aims to provide modern athletic infrastructure across the country to nurture future champions and promote sports as a driver of national progress.

The flagship complex in Kaya will occupy a 28,000-square-meter site and include a synthetic turf football field, a six-lane athletic track, a multi-sport court, demountable bleachers, and prefabricated buildings housing locker rooms, classrooms, a medical clinic, a cafeteria, and administrative offices. Additional amenities will include a secure children’s play area.

Minister Somda emphasized that this project reflects President Ibrahim Traoré’s strong commitment to youth development.

Beyond talent scouting and training, the initiative is expected to boost local economies by creating jobs through partnerships with thirteen Burkinabe companies and Turkish construction firm MPK ENERJI.

Kaya Prefect Solange Kima/Minoungou highlighted the project’s broader social and educational benefits while assuring full support from local authorities to ensure its success.

The first phase of construction will cover the Centre-North, Plateau-Central, Centre, Centre-West, and North regions, with subsequent phases expanding to the West, South-West, East, and Sahel regions.

Through this ambitious nationwide effort, the Burkinabè government aims to build a strong pipeline of athletic talent, promote social inclusion, and reduce regional disparities through sports.

This transformative project positions Burkina Faso to become a regional leader in sports development while creating new opportunities for its youth.

The academies are expected to serve as hubs for identifying and training the next generation of Burkinabe athletes who can compete at national and international levels.
