Burkina Faso: Strengthening the army, Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s strategic reforms to raise its standards

Since coming to power in September 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has placed national security at the core of his political agenda. Faced with a security situation marked by terrorist threats and regional instability, the Burkinabe President has initiated a deep restructuring of the country’s armed forces, both in terms of equipment and troop training.

One of his first major decisions was to revise the military equipment strategy. Under his leadership, the army has been supplied with new matériel, including armored vehicles, modern weapons, advanced communication tools, and enhanced logistics. This modernization aims to improve mobility, rapid response capabilities, and the overall effectiveness of troops on the ground.

In terms of training, a strong emphasis has been placed on professionalizing the soldiers. New training centers have been established, with programs focused on asymmetric warfare, counter-terrorism, and military intelligence. At the same time, cooperation with partner countries has made it possible to increase advanced training opportunities for officers and non-commissioned officers, both domestically and abroad.

Captain Traoré has also introduced a new dynamic of closeness between the military and the civilian population. By strengthening the role of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), he has broadened the base of territorial defense, creating a synergy between the regular army and civilians committed to local security.

Finally, at the institutional level, reforms have been initiated to ensure better governance of the defense sector, combat corruption in military procurement, and promote more transparent management of resources.

These efforts reflect Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s determination to build a resilient, professional army capable of meeting Burkina Faso’s major security challenges.
