Nottingham Forest’s Awoniyi hospitalized after collision with goalpost

Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for a serious abdominal injury. The 27-year-old Nigerian international was hurt in the closing minutes of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City when he crashed into the goalpost while attempting to score from an Anthony Elanga cross.

According to the club, the Nottingham Forest striker had successful initial surgery Monday night, with a second procedure planned for Wednesday.

The club keep on stating the he is “recovering well,” the incident has sparked concerns about player safety protocols.

The injury occurred during a delayed offside call – officials kept their flags down as per current rules to allow for potential VAR review.

This policy, while designed to maximize goal-scoring opportunities, has drawn criticism for putting players at unnecessary risk.

Club owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly confronted manager Nuno Espírito Santo on the pitch after the match, visibly upset about the handling of the situation.

Awoniyi, who came on as a late substitute, required extensive medical attention before being transported to the hospital.

The alarming incident has reignited discussions about whether player welfare is being compromised by current officiating standards in high-pressure moments of the game.
