Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé’s pragmatic approach to restoring peace in eastern DRC

Driven by the leadership of Council President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, the African Union’s appointed mediator in the security crisis in Eastern Congo, Lomé is actively pursuing its agenda for a swift return to stability in the conflict-stricken region.

On Saturday, May 17, a high-level meeting took place in the Togolese capital, led by Faure Gnassingbé and attended by key political figures from across the continent.

This strategic meeting aimed to align the various peace initiatives—namely the Nairobi and Luanda processes—in order to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive African-led mediation. Through this pragmatic approach, based on dialogue, regional coordination, and the consolidation of diplomatic achievements, Togo is reinforcing its role as a credible mediator.

In addition to this approach, which has been welcomed by his peers, Council President Faure Gnassingbé is also engaging in active dialogue with international partners, including Qatar and the United States—highlighting the global scope of his efforts.

Thanks to this active, discreet, and effective diplomacy, Lomé is positioning itself as a bridge between all parties involved, confirming its status as a key player in promoting peace and regional stability. In an Africa facing multiple sources of conflict, Togo today represents a responsible voice, capable of reconciling divergent positions for the benefit of the African people.
