Togo: Rural electrification in the Savannahs, a strategic development lever for the country

Launched in a context of growing security challenges, the Emergency Program for the Savanes Region (PURS) has reached a decisive milestone with the electrification of 20 localities between September 2020 and June 2025. This initiative, carried out under the second phase of the Rural Electrification Project (ProEnergie II), marks a significant step forward in strengthening resilience and promoting local development.

Funded to the tune of 6 million euros (around 4 billion CFA francs), it reflects the joint commitment of the Togolese government and its partners to address the core challenges faced by the country’s most vulnerable areas.

Specifically, the installation of mini electrical grids and the distribution of 2,800 home solar kits have directly improved living conditions in the targeted areas. The electrification of several health centers represents a major advancement in access to healthcare, especially in a region that has been grappling with humanitarian and security issues since 2021.

This progress is part of a national strategy aimed at ensuring equitable, reliable, and sustainable access to energy. It also reflects the authorities’ determination to enhance the resilience of local communities in the face of regional instability.

Ultimately, beyond simply providing electricity, the ProEnergie II project helps reduce regional disparities and lays the groundwork for more inclusive socio-economic development in the Savanes region. It serves as a territorial intervention model that could inspire other regions of the country.
