Niger: A country at the forefront of medicine, a revolution in cancer treatment spearheaded by the President

Niger has taken a historic step in the fight against cancer with the groundbreaking of a Positron Emission Tomography combined with CT Scan (PET-CT) unit at the Niamey General Referral Hospital.

This project, costing over 13 billion CFA francs, positions the country as a pioneer in West Africa in using this advanced technology for cancer diagnosis and monitoring. It marks a major milestone that will revolutionize Nigerien medicine and strengthen the fight against non-communicable diseases.

This initiative reflects the strategic vision of President Abdourahamane Tiani, who is firmly committed to a modern, accessible, and sovereign healthcare system. By placing the well-being of the people at the heart of public policy, the Head of State reaffirms his dedication to building a resilient and innovative health system, capable of meeting today’s challenges.

The mixed financing—combining international cooperation and state funds—demonstrates a strong will for medical sovereignty. The launch of the construction of this modern unit aligns with President Tiani’s strategic vision for accessible and modern healthcare, as outlined in the Resilience Program for the Safeguard of the Homeland and the national health and social development plan.

Through this project, Niger sends a clear message: it is investing in the future, in life, and in the dignity of its citizens—an essential foundation for sustainable development.
