CHAN 2024: Algeria held by Niger but through to the quarterfinals

On the final day of Group C in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Algeria, considered one of the tournament favorites, failed to overcome Niger. Against a team already eliminated but eager to exit with pride, the Fennecs were held to a frustrating goalless draw (0-0).

From start to finish, Madjid Bougherra’s men dictated the pace of the game, dominating possession with nearly 70%. Algeria launched repeated attacks and registered 11 attempts on goal, but the Mena’s defense stood firm, showing discipline and resilience until the final whistle.

The match seemed to tilt further in Algeria’s favor when Niger was reduced to ten men in the 77th minute following the dismissal of Ibrahim Djingarey. Despite this numerical advantage, the Algerians were unable to break down the opposition and turn their dominance into a much-needed goal.

While the result feels disappointing given the match’s one-sided nature, Algeria still achieved its main objective: securing qualification for the quarterfinals. With six points, the Fennecs finished second in Group C. Niger, meanwhile, ends its campaign at the bottom of the group and exits the competition prematurely.

This performance highlights Algeria’s main shortcoming in the tournament so far—their struggle to convert chances into goals. As they move into the knockout stages, Bougherra’s side will need to show more attacking efficiency if they are to live up to their status as favorites and challenge seriously for the CHAN 2024 title.
