Burkina Faso: Army neutralizes more than 100 terrorists during an attack in Foutouri
Ouagadougou, August 20, 2025 – Burkinabe armed forces repelled a large-scale terrorist attack at dawn on Wednesday against their detachment based in Foutouri, in the Eastern region. According to the Burkina Information Agency (AIB), the operation resulted in the neutralization of more than 100 terrorists, including two senior leaders identified as Abou Souleymane and Abdoul Bâdre, both notorious for orchestrating several deadly assaults in the area.
The army reported that nearly 600 heavily armed attackers launched a massive offensive aimed at “sowing chaos and seizing control of the base.” Supported by both air and ground assets, the soldiers mounted a forceful counterattack that drove the terrorists into retreat.
The counter-offensive also destroyed a kamikaze drone and led to the seizure of a significant cache of equipment, including assault rifles, machine guns, and several motorcycles used by the attackers.
This victory, hailed as a major step in the fight against insecurity, comes as part of intensified operations carried out by the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) to reclaim areas still under jihadist threat.
The Eastern region, which borders Niger and Benin, remains one of the hardest-hit areas by terrorist violence that has plagued Burkina Faso since 2015. Despite ongoing challenges, authorities affirm that the military strategy and nationwide mobilization will eventually succeed in reversing the trend for good.
