DRC: President Félix Tshisekedi discusses humanitarian situation and refugees with Filippo Grandi
On Tuesday, President Félix Tshisekedi received Mr. Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), at his offices in the African Union City during an official visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The mission is part of an assessment of the humanitarian situation across the Congolese territory.
Central to the discussions between the Head of State and his guest was the implementation of commitments made by the DRC in favor of refugees and internally displaced persons, in accordance with the Peace Agreement signed in Washington (United States) and the Declaration of Principles adopted in Doha (Qatar). These international instruments aim to strengthen humanitarian protection and improve living conditions for those affected by crises.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the efforts made by the Congolese government in hosting, assisting, and supporting refugees on its soil. The UN High Commissioner reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to continue its multifaceted support to Congolese authorities to meet the needs of vulnerable populations.
Furthermore, President Félix Tshisekedi and Mr. Filippo Grandi agreed on the importance of harmonizing key messages to be presented at the upcoming International Peace Conference scheduled in Paris in October 2025. This coordination aims to project a common and coherent voice on issues of peace, stability, and international solidarity.
