Togo: Maritime sovereignty asserted through strategic modernization of the Port of Lomé

Togo is writing a new chapter in its economic ambition through the vast modernization program of the Autonomous Port of Lomé. The dredging works launched at the Lomé Container Terminal (LCT), carried out with rigor, embody the ambition to firmly position Togo as a strategic hub at the heart of West African maritime trade, through a sovereign economic diplomacy driven by excellence.

The ultimate goal of these works is to welcome giant vessels of over 19,000 TEUs and 400 meters in length. With these new arrivals, the Port of Lomé is not merely expanding its port infrastructure. It is a strategic, carefully considered choice that reflects the vision of strengthening the country’s image on the international stage, thereby consolidating its logistical and commercial sovereignty. This major project is part of a broader dynamic supported by joint investments from MSC, through TIL, and China Merchants Ports Holding, amounting to 500 million euros—a clear demonstration of the trust that global players place in Togo’s stability and vision.

The port’s transformation into a true regional transshipment platform, directly connected to the landlocked markets of the AES and neighboring port powers, is one of the concrete results of the development policy driven at the highest level of the State. Streamlined procedures, logistical competitiveness, and a long-term vision in infrastructure management have today made the Port of Lomé a model of African success.

Beyond the figures, this modernization confirms the image of a strategic State, in full control of its growth drivers, and aware that economic sovereignty also depends on mastering its maritime flows. The Port of Lomé is no longer just a gateway—it has become a regional economic lung, a lever of power, and a showcase of a Togo on the move.
